At least twice each year the lock at Esna is closed for routine maintenance - usually in June and December. This means that the Nile Cruisers are unable to reach Luxor and will therefore wait at Esna, where your cruise will begin. This can be a minor irritation, as Esna is at least 30 minutes by coach from Luxor and means that it is less easy for you to be able to stroll around Luxor at your leisure.

However, Nile cruises taken at these times of the year can be quite a bargain as the price is often reduced. It is worth checking before you book a cruise to see when the lock will be closed - you can then make your choice beforehand and not be disappointed on arrival.
