Hotepsekhemwy was the first king of the 2nd Dynasty, reigning for more than thirty five years. During his reign, an earthquake hit the vicinity of Bubastis in the Nile Delta. Some historians believe that his brother started a military coup and overthrew him.

It is thought that Hotepsekhemwy was buried at Saqqara.
