Stone columns representing bundles of reeds were widely used in the Step Pyramid Complex of Djoser. This type of column had fallen out of general use in Egypt by the time of the New Kingdom, although it was still popular in Nubia after this time. This type of column is quite similar to the polygonal columns, although, whereas the polygonal columns had flat faces, the reeded columns had curved flutes (to better represent reeds). In the Djoser Complex, these stone reeded columns were fashioned with an imitation leather capping. This capping would have been used on columns or supports made of real reeds in order to prevent them from splaying or breaking apart at the top.
